Wedding Preparations

At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’” Matthew 25:6

Weddings are on my mind. As my son’s wedding day draws close, we have showers, gifts, invitation responses, and plans to finalize. I have my dress, and family and friends are invited. It is an exciting and bittersweet time of life, as he and his fiancĂ©e put the finishing touches on their plans.

My husband and I were engaged for 22 months. We had a long time to anticipate our wedding day. In those days we didn’t use wedding coordinators. Dear church friends helped with everything. There were six weddings in our church that summer, and ours was the fifth. We received a lot of excellent advice from the ones who went before on how to prepare.

Jesus refers to weddings several times in the New Testament. He compares His Second Coming to the bridegroom coming to claim his bride. He is the Bridegroom and the believers, are His Bride. I must prepare for His coming with even more eager anticipation than for my own wedding. In Jewish weddings of His day, the bride didn’t know the exact time her bridegroom would come for her. And we don’t know when Jesus will come for us.

Jesus told a parable about ten virgins who went out to meet the bridegroom. Five had plenty of oil for their lamps. Five didn’t bring enough oil. They begged the ones who were prepared for some oil, but finally went to buy some. It’s impossible to get to heaven because you know someone who was prepared. While they were gone, the bridegroom came, but they missed him. The doors to the wedding feast were closed and bridegroom said he didn’t know them.

One reason I have led women’s Bible studies for most of my adult life is to give women a chance to prepare to meet Jesus on that day. I used to ask my kids if they would invite Jesus along when they went to the movies, when they were with friends, or on a date. We need to be ready at any time, never growing lax or lazy, never thinking spiritual things can wait.

If your life were to end tonight, would He say He didn’t know you and close the door, or invite you into the feast as His beloved bride? Live in joyful expectation of His coming.

In the Shadow

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-5

My friend’s suffering was intense. Her cancer was very aggressive and fast-growing. Within three months she moved seeming health to heaven. Her suffering and death clarified the spiritual meanings of light and shadow my mind.

Looking out over the peaks and valley from my mountain home, I saw a parallel between my friend’s suffering and the rising of the sun in the morning sky. As light peeks over the ridge to the east, it first illumines the tops of the mountain peaks to the west. The shadows in the valley below recede slowly as the sun rises higher in the sky.

The light draws my eyes to the peaks above when the valley still rests in shadow. In the same way, suffering should draw my heart upward, making me long for Gods’ light. His word enables me to know with certainty that I will not remain in the darkness.

The interplay of light and shadow in life often reveal strengths and weaknesses we did not know we had. Before cancer confined my friend to bed, she talked about Christ to neighbors, co-workers, and friends. Her cancer opened doors which had once been closed. As she said, no one has the courage to say no to a dying woman. Suffering enables us to relate to people undergoing many kinds of trials. Basic concepts are transferrable to many different situations.

As a quiet hush fills the valley before the sun permeates it with light, suffering, once embraced, has the potential to develop patience to wait when the certainty of heaven exists. Seeking God in times of pain can give the assurance that He will, in time, reveal Himself and grant release from the trials and pain of this world.

When circumstances draw me into the shadow, I must choose to look to His light to avoid being overcome by darkness. Looking to the One who bore all my sin and shame, enables God to give me His comfort and fill me with His light. Then, like my friend, I have comfort to share with others, that they might also find His peace.

Time Management

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalms 90:12

With a second-grader and a kindergartner in two different schools, one ten miles from home, I had no lack of things to do. When the phone call came from my Bible Study Fellowship teaching leader, asking if I would consider becoming a discussion leader, I said yes. I was anxious to be trained to lead a Bible study discussion, and looked forward to the challenge of ministering to the women in my group. There was a lot on my plate.

Lessons, phone calls, meetings, teaching first grade choir at church, and driving long distances on the Interstate to get my kids to school was a lot. Added to that was caring for my family, soccer practices, and piano lessons. The obvious path would have been to concentrate on my family, and the necessities.

As I prayed, I knew God had called me to minister to other women. I craved the in-depth study of God’s word, so I prayed and kept going. As I look back, I wonder how I managed to juggle everything, yet I would do the same if I had to choose again.

Following eight years as a BSF discussion leader, I began the first weekly women’s Bible studies in our small, non-denominational church. By that time, my youngest was a senior in high school, the oldest, a freshman at college. Two months after accepting the position of Women’s Ministry Bible Study Coordinator, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The easiest thing would have been to resign. My husband and I prayed, and I kept on, building a team of facilitators and assistants who could handle things when I could not, for both morning and evening studies.

I am not Superwoman. I got tired, and frustrated, but God reassured me that I was in His will. It hasn’t always been easy, but I have led Bible studies for 18 years. I don’t know how many hours I have studied, but I could not have been more blessed.

Doing God’s work opens His storehouses of mercy and grace. When determined to do His will, there is no limit to His mercy and grace. When I make my time available to God, He enables and blesses.

Waterfalls and Waves

“My soul is downcast within me…Deep calls to deep in the roar of your
waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.”
Psalm 42:6-7

I lay in bed and cried all day long. Nothing my husband could say made me feel better and I couldn’t explain what was going on inside of me. It takes some aligning of your heart and mind when it becomes obvious that God’s answer to your cherished prayer is, “No.”

I had a choice to remain sad and angry or to accept God’s will and move on, trusting Him.

He is God, by the very virtue of His name, the Creator and Ruler of the universe, the Name at the sound of which “every knee shall bow and every tongue confess.” Only He knows why some things must be and why some things will never be. The reasons may have to wait for heaven—a lifetime of not understanding—of accepting and moving forward.

Verse 7 reveals the all-powerful, sovereign God, the One who is above all other powers, the Name above all names, the One who controls the immense and raging might of a waterfall.

We stood, one time, at a look-out point atop the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River. It was awesome, beautiful and terrifying at the same time. We held tight to the hands of our children, unless fascinated, they should lean over the railing too far and be swept away.

If I am to live my life victoriously, I must reach that point where I submit myself wholly to the will of God. I must accept what He has allowed, even if His reasons are not revealed until eternity.

Notice when the writer says the waves and breakers swept over him, Who controls and owns them. The master of the mighty waves that threaten to sweep me away and fill me with fear and dread, is none other than the sovereign God who inspires awe by His mastery of the waterfall’s power.

What waves threaten to overcome you today? What seems to be sweeping everything away, leaving you no hope?

Look to the One who controls all things. Remember His everlasting love. Do not fear the events which swirl out of your ability to check and contain. He is in control.
