The Brown Cloud of Sin

“Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.”
Psalm 51:2

The ominous brown cloud moved closer and closer, obscuring the mountains and valley from our view. Dust storms were not a common thing in our mountain community, but this one, silent and relentless in its approach, would soon engulf us. We scuttled to close windows and doors against the onslaught, preferring the sweltering heat to the brown fog, of a “haboob.”

As the shroud of the gritty cloud of dust, surrounded us, I felt trapped and threatened. Like the feeling of guilt when I have done or said something wrong, the air made me feel dirty. A shower may wash away dust, but it does nothing for guilt and shame. When I was little, I tried to hide the evidence of things I did wrong. I can get away with hiding things for a little while, but I will be found out.

Shame and guilt isn’t always visible to the world like the grit and grime of a sandstorm, but it sullies our senses as dust clings to sweat and clothing. A shower washes the outside, but the heart knowledge of my wrongs remains. Good deeds are a palliative measure, but they don’t rid my spirit of the heaviness of sin.

Just before He died, Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, telling them that unless He washed them, they could have no part of Him. Not only is there a barrier between me and the person I’ve wronged, but a wall goes up between God and I as well. He sees into my heart and knows me in ways no one on earth ever will.

True cleansing has to come from the inside, where Jesus tells us that all evil originates. Confessing my wrong thoughts and actions to God enables me feel His forgiveness. Once I am in right standing with Him, I find myself wanting to please Him. When I please God, other situations can begin to heal.

The best remedy for a brown fog of my spirit is the cleansing work of the Holy Spirit.

The Hummingbirds’ Lesson

“And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches
in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

Hummingbirds should be as beautiful and perfect as they look. They’re not.

I enjoy watching them at the feeders at my mountain home, but I have been struck by how similar they are to me and the people around me. I see these beautiful little jewels of God’s creation as greedy little creatures. Each one wants everything all to itself, no matter how much there is.

When threatened they go after each other in amazing aerial acrobatics, performing all kinds of intricate moves to make the others go away. They squawk and fuss at each other making quite a racket.

I can be just like that when I forget I don’t really have a clue what God considers His perfect best for me. To my shame I have, more than once tried to force my own way when surrendering to God’s would have accomplished everything without strife and intricate maneuverings on my part.

The sovereignty of God is always at work. It’s not about me—it’s about Him, His plan and His purpose. My plans are temporary—His are eternal. My perceived needs are purely selfish. His knowledge of my needs is perfect. If I truly seek God each day and determine to accept whatever comes as being from His gracious hand, sufficient in every way, I am so much happier.

Everything He allows me to experience is necessary for maturing me and bringing my faith to completion. When I stop striving for what I want and accept what He sends I can feel His peace. I cease the maneuvering and fussing. I squawk less and hum more.

I want to be in the center of God’s plan, accepting what He sends into my life without complaint. I want His peace so even when I don’t understand, I can accept His best for my life.

What steals my peace? What situations make me maneuver and complain?

Today I determine to give those things to God and see what He will do. I choose to trust Him to give more than I can imagine out of His glorious riches.

Blessing Disguised
“For He wounds, but He also binds up; He injures, but His hands also heal.” Job 5:18
Pain, searing, aching, mind-numbing, eye-blurring, pain radiated through every tendon, ligament, and muscle. I had been spared such misery for a few years, thanks to a medication I no longer take. The pain returned with a vengeance—remembered, hated, debilitating, annoying.
Due to side-effects, I chose to return to pain rather than develop a new health problem. I made the decision, knowing what was likely, praying it wouldn’t happen. I remember telling myself that God must care for me very much to allow me to continue suffering when He could end it in an instant.
I want to be everything He wants me to be, but the price is dear. A chronic pain problem has haunted me for more years than I can count. I never used to tell anyone about it, tried my best to hide it from everyone, including my husband, but a friend said she sees it in my eyes, even if I say nothing.
Some people carry emotional pain and scars, mine is physical. It is for my benefit and God’s glory, not punishment, not a lack of love. Job is my example, his God, my hope. Over the years I’ve become quite fond of the old fellow. He speaks words of truth that comfort me and give me hope. He reminds me I am not alone.
Many identify with my trials. Not everyone understands my solace. Trials can make you bitter or make you better. The difference is that bitter has an “I” in it. When I stop focusing on myself, I can see God. I can recognize the suffering of others, and in doing so, share the comfort God has offered me.
Blessings can be wrapped in the guise of pain—the opportunity to identify with someone who has lost hope, who can’t see God working, who feels alone. If I hide the fact of what I suffer, if I allow it to conquer me and rob me of hope, and turn my focus inward, I rob God of my service. I rob myself of the blessing of seeing God to touch the lives of others through me.
Look to your own life and choose to allow God to use you in whatever trial you are in today.

My Fear vs. God’s Sovereignty

He fills his hands with lightning and commands it to strike its mark.” Job 36:32 NIV

The bulging notebook tells the story of my fear. Article after article about lighting facts and safety are crammed in until nothing else will fit. When my dad was killed by a bolt of lightning under a clear, blue sky, my fear spiraled out of control. I pulled my kids off soccer fields, refused to use the electric appliances or take a shower during a storm. Talking on the phone is forbidden.

As a child, my dad sat with me in his lap, telling me how beautiful it was, explaining how it showed the power of God. Lightning striking two of my parents’ homes erased any fascination he managed to encourage. It is a terrible, fearful thing, and I try not to watch it.

Living on the side of a mountain at 7400 feet puts us in danger of lightning sparked forest fires. I was carried away with the beautiful view, and never thought about the storms.

An in-depth study of scripture convinced me that only God controls the lightning, but it hasn’t enabled me to see its beauty. So little is under human control, however, acknowledging God’s sovereignty gives me peace. I can accept that God took my father to heaven via a lightning bolt, but I don’t take chances by being out in a storm.

I have heard it said that God’s man, at the center of God’s will, is immortal until God is finished with him. Love of God and the desire to serve wherever He leads makes me lean on His protection. Believing that He is all-powerful frees me from concerns for self. Stepping out of our comfort zone grows and matures faith.

John says perfect love casts out fear, and I believe God loves me perfectly. Stormy times in life cause me to depend on God in new ways, and lightning storms should do the same. Whatever gives me concern must be submitted to God and left with Him. I will only experience triumph when I am trusting in God with all my heart, no matter what my circumstances.

Just as the lightning comes from His fingers, so do the events of our lives. Step out in faith, and see what He will do.

2MefromHim Devotional for the Week - July 1

Who is in Control?

“Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.”
Proverbs 25:28

Things that hurt my children make me angry. My temper is perhaps my worst weakness. When something isn’t done right, I sometimes lose self-control. Losing control doesn’t honor God. When my daughter was a senior in high school, I felt a coach failed to handle a situation in the correct manner.

Following surgery for thyroid cancer, I was weak and my emotions were raw. I sometimes made choices based on my feelings, without seeking God’s way. When the first meeting didn’t accomplish what I wanted, I went higher. My words were angry and hurtful, rather than constructive and healing.

Ten years later, I still have regrets. The coach was wrong in some ways, but my behavior was not justified. I failed to let God work things out His way. As a Christian my actions should reflect my Lord and Savior. I should not act until I am certain I am in concert with Him. There are no regrets when He is honored.

Every time I speak, I make a choice to honor God or do things my way. I failed to seek His guidance, and perhaps made things worse. My daughter showed more maturity than I.

When faced with a situation where you must choose how to respond, stop and pray. Do you lack self-control? Are you focused on your desires when perhaps God has something different in mind?

Pray through the situation. Don’t act until you see clearly what God would have you do. Rather than lose self-control, honor God by letting Him take control.  You will have no regrets and everything will turn out much better.
