Spiritual Housecleaning
But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.  What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him…”
Philippians 3:7-9a

This summer is all about clutter. My life is full of it. There’s nothing like a total shake-up to make dealing with clutter a necessity. With the news that my husband would be working from home in a few months, I realized something had to be done.

I spend hours each week preparing to lead a weekly Bible study. I write. I do family history. Over the past few years there has been a lot more of those things than housework. With two grown children, out of the house, but not totally settled, a lot of stuff is hidden in closets that no one has seen in years. In order to create a home office, a lot of paraphernalia would be coming in. There simply wasn’t room.
Cleaning out clutter has a snowball effect. What you remove from one area must be either thrown away or recycled for someone’s benefit. A few years of neglect, and every available space is full, but not everything there is good or useful.
My spiritual life is the same. Without regular housecleaning and attention to detail, stuff piles up, creating a mess that must be dealt with if I am to grow spiritually and serve God effectively. Sins pile up like the cobwebs and dead bugs in the back of my closets. Lack of daily self-examination and confession lead to messes I prefer to hide from God, just as I prefer visitors not look into my closets.
An orderly life makes time for Bible-reading and prayer, accompanied by close scrutiny to see if I am living in line with God’s word. Continual neglect of the confession of sin, and failure to replace it with right behaviors, leads to a messy spiritual life.
Hauling bags of trash out of my closets and donating items which can be used by others is just like keeping on track with God. I must rid my heart of the garbage of old habits and sins. I must replace it with new insights about walking with Jesus which deepen my spiritual life and enable me to offer godly wisdom to others.
Lord, create in me a heart that is free of the clutter of sin and neglect, but full of your wisdom and purpose. Enable me to keep my life and my house free of unsightly clutter and full of things which glorify you.

Where Is Your Treasure

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21

A gaping hole was left in my life when my father died suddenly at the age of sixty-five. He was the one I went to with problems and questions. He was, as one friend put it, “our encyclopedia.” He was our advisor on both spiritual and worldly matters. After his death I developed an insatiable curiosity about heaven. I wanted to know where my father had gone.

As I read and came to understand more about what a firm hope we have in heaven it began to dawn on me that Christian loved ones who go before are some of the treasures I have in heaven. They are kept safe, I have no need to worry or be concerned in any way about them.

How very different it is with personal possessions here on earth. What if something happened to our life savings?

If I truly entrust my eternal life, to Jesus, should I not also trust Him with our finances. Everything we own is a gift from God, not by the work of our hands, but by His grace. He cares when a sparrow falls to the ground, so it stands to reason that He will care even more about my needs. He gave His life for me, so He will see to my earthly needs as well as my future in heaven.

The worries of this life are so insignificant. In the end the only thing that mattered for my father was his relationship to Jesus. It is the only thing that matters for any of us. More valuable though, is the legacy of faithfulness to his Lord Jesus Christ that is remembered by everyone who knew him, years after his death.

What can I do for God that will make the maximum investment in this life? I must make certain my ideas of treasure match those of my heavenly father. Only then will I make a mark on the world that lives after me.

2MefromHim Promise for the Week - June 16

Biblical Wisdom for Daily Living -  A Challenge to fathers -
"The righteous [man] who walks in his integrity—
blessed are his children after him!"
Proverbs 20:7 ESV

My Two Fathers

When I was very little and afraid of the storm,
My father would hold me, so I felt safe and warm.
Silly songs, funny stories, and wild games we would play—
The fun and his love chased the bad things away.
The lightning and thunder were never so bad
When I was held safe in the arms of my dad.

As I grew older and the problems grew more large,
The gentle, patients answers still came straight from his heart.
There was no more important thing he ever had to do
Than take time to show— the important thing was you.
He never gave anyone less than his best,
No matter what the need was, his commitment stood the test.

When lightning struck our house one night,
Shattering the darkness with its brilliant light—
Hobbling on crutches from a broken leg,
He soon had us laughing from the jokes that he made.
Once certain that all would soon be well—
He soon had another great story to tell.

Many things set my father apart,
Not the least of which was his great, loving heart.
People who came to my father in need
Always left knowing they had a friend indeed.
He did much to further the Father’s plan
By the generosity of his giant hands.

My father rose each morning to meet with his Lord.
He loved Him and served Him and cherished His word.
He was a man of great strength—yet gentle and kind
Because he loved the Lord Jesus with heart, soul, and mind.
He would say that if anything set him apart,
It was the presence of the Savior, who lived in his heart.

Then the lightning once again appeared,
Something all in the family but my father feared.
He, rather than seeing something to fear—
Said it showed the protection of God very clear.
For all in the house were both safe and sound
And only slight damage to the house was found.
As the years passed by, the family grew,
The son-in-laws came, and the grandchildren, too.
Each one he loved in a unique special way,
And faithfully, for each one, he daily would pray—
Upon our family, God’s blessings were poured,
Because each day my father spent time with his Lord.

It could have been just a regular day,
But our heavenly Father didn’t see it that way.
A man going fishing—just and ordinary man—
But our heavenly Father had another plan.
Ordinary things, when you live for the Lord,
Can often have bearing on eternal reward.

Once more, God’s lightning entered our lives,
And on fiery wings, bore my father home, through the skies.
The look on his face showed amazement, they said,
And confirmed for us all that he was not really dead.
He had gotten his first glimpse of his heavenly home,
And he knew that our Lord would not leave us alone.

The lessons that he taught us through the life that he lived;
And the Lord that he gave all the love he could give;
Are still here inside us—though he’s gone from our sight
Across that wide river— the River of Life.
He’s sitting there watching—he knows we will come;
And from his side, it really won’t be very long.

If we could just see—each event in our lives—
Is meant just to show us, God is loving and wise.
The traits that I loved in my father, you see,
Are all of the things God will be—just for me.
And so when I long for Daddy’s face—just to see,
I’ll look up to heaven—where two fathers wait for me.
Written June 14, 1996.  In loving memory of my daddy, Lyle E. Thurston, who died when he was struck by lightning while fly-fishing on the San Juan River, in the “Quality Waters” below Navajo Dam near Farmington, New Mexico on September 29, 1995.

My Spiritual Garden

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
2 Peter 3:18

I do not have a green thumb. The genes which make for a successful gardener passed me by without a trace. Therefore, I was surprised when the geraniums, in pots by a window in our garage for the winter, were not only growing leaves, but had a bloom. True, they were pale, sickly looking things, but they were alive.

The only plants I manage to grow each summer are giant pots of geraniums on my front porch. They not only survive my hit-or-miss watering and feeding techniques, they are not a favorite with the squirrels which seem to think flowers (not stems which must taste like broccoli) are a delicacy.
I know that food and water in regular helpings are necessary for plants to grow and thrive. Watering and praying go well together. Today I was struck by the notion that my plants are not so different than our relationship to God. Our spiritual lives require appropriate food, water, and light also. If I neglect my daily time of prayer and Bible reading, and fail to attend worship services on a regular basis, I wither and die spiritually. I fail to become the thriving specimen of God’s handiwork that He created me to be.
Scripture makes it plan that people need careful tending also. Fellowship encourages me to blossom and reach out to others. Prayer waters and refreshes my spirit, helping me to withstand the perils of life. Spending time in His word on a daily basis feeds my hungry soul, keeping me strong and healthy.
If I neglect any of these aspects of the Christian life, it affects all the others. I lose my beauty and fail to benefit myself or those around me. My spirit languishes without careful nurturing, just as my flowers wither without proper food, water, and light.

As my geraniums remind me daily, I can become a thing of beauty with proper care. Today, I choose to nurture my spirit as I nurture my plants. I want to be a thing of beauty in God’s garden of life.

Forgiveness

“‘Come now, let us settle the matter,’ says the Lord. ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.’”
It was ruined. My favorite red shirt with the rhinestone collar would never be right again. It was my own fault. I am famous for trying to do more than one thing at once. Now, after attempting to carry a stack of books and papers while the clear coat of nail polish dried, I decided to leave it to dry. I didn’t want to smear it worse.
The next day, I attempted to scratch it off, but a whitish spot still clung to the fabric. Very carefully, I tested some non-acetone polish remover on the underside of the hem. When I didn’t damage the fabric, I rubbed at the spot with the polish remover. To my dismay, it became even whiter. Nothing removed the stain.
Later, I realized how much like sin that spot is. Each one of us is special to God, loved for who He made us to be. But we do things we shouldn’t, thinking we’ll get away with it. Then the unexpected happens. Things don’t work out as we planned. It is no longer possible to cover over the mistake we made. It sits there, glaring at us, a blemish that cannot be hidden.
Though I might be successful in hiding what I’ve done from others, God sees. If I continue to pretend I can hide it from Him, I am no longer as useful to Him. There is a glaring spot, right in the middle that says sinner, hypocrite, liar, fake.
When I bring my sins before God, bowing in contrition, confessing in humility, humbling myself before His throne, He turns the spots and blemishes of my life into opportunities.  The things which once marred me become chances to see God’s great love and mercy by allowing Him to show me His forgiveness. They become illustrations I can share with others, showing that the forgiveness I have received is available to them also.
Unlike the shirt, which will never be worn outside my home again, once I receive God’s forgiveness, my testimony of God’s grace might be the means of someone else realizing God’s forgiveness. My loss becomes my gain.
