Considering Loss

"I even reckon all things as pure loss because of the priceless privilege of knowing
Christ Jesus my Lord.” Philippians 3:8 (Weymouth)

I startled awake, panic pounding in my chest—one of those nightmares when you awaken thinking dream was real. I took some deep breaths. The dream wasn’t real, but the event that prompted it was.
The evening before, my husband and I attended a meeting with our mountain neighbors about the high fire danger in our area. A woman from the forest service reassured us that our area is one of the most watched areas in the country, high on the priority list for having fire-fighting teams already in place. I wasn’t certain if I felt reassured or not, considering two teenage boys were caught building campfires in the forest at the end of our street.
We came away with hands full of information about preparing for this most dangerous of fire seasons. Our conversation at dinner centered on how to prepare and what was most important to keep safe.
Our world is an uncertain place. With bombings in Boston, unrest in the Middle East, threats from North Korea, a terrible drought at home, and uncertainty about my husband’s job, I feel as if everything solid is being pulled out from under me. Sometimes it becomes overwhelming.
When Paul says he considers all things loss for the privilege of knowing Christ Jesus, he knew what he was talking about. He was beaten, flogged, ridiculed, threatened, shipwrecked, and homeless. He gave up the life of a well-to-do, educated Pharisee, the top of Jewish society, to live as an itinerate evangelist.
I love my home, my library of books, my old family photographs, the memories tucked away in the attic, and the mountains surrounding our home, but that is not my treasure.
The one thing I consider most important can never be taken from me, my relationship with and security in Jesus Christ. When things threaten from the outside, I must cling to my hope in God. If I lose all I possess, He is enough.
When all else is lost, Christ is the solid rock beneath my feet. I can rest assured, because in Him, I am prepared.

2MefromHim - God's Promise for the Coming Week

Psalm 23 (New International Version)

A psalm of David.

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

The Marathon of Life

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
2 Timothy 4:6-8

Explosions changing the sounds of laughter and celebration at the finish line of the Boston Marathon to screams and cries will remain in the minds and hearts of Americans for a long time. "Moments like these, terrible as they are, don't show our weakness; they show our strength," said Suffolk County, Massachusetts, District Attorney Dan Conley.
As spectators and participants rushed to the sides of burned and bleeding victims, the city streets of Boston took on the appearance of a war-zone rather than one of America’s oldest and most beautiful cities.
Citizens worked together with law enforcement to apprehend the suspects, sending in photos and videos which identified the men whose acts of hatred changed life forever for hundreds. As Bostonians once fought together for the prize of a free country, they fought together to find the perpetrators of this unspeakable violence.
Runners train for years to compete in marathons, sacrificing to win the prize of endurance. In training for a race, it is impossible to take a break. Muscles weaken and strength is lost if training lapses.
Like marathoners, Christians must be in constant training, also. Spiritual muscles must be kept in continuous conditioning. Like the bombers in Boston, Satan is like a prowling lion, awaiting his opportunity to destroy us.
Whether I understand what is happening or not, how I react to hardship reveals if my strength comes from the Lord. In the race of life our true nature is also shown by our spiritual strength. Because I profess to be a Christian, when difficulties come, people watch to see how I handle the pressure. Have I trained hard enough? Will I bend or will I break?
Paul compared the Christian life to a race. The prize is that of eternal life, of spirits in top condition, minds sharp, hearts strong and unafraid, confidence as we look forward to reaching our goal and achieving our prize.
I long for Christ’s appearing, depending on Him as I run my marathon of life. Leaning on Jesus Christ, I am never weak.

Overcome Evil with Good

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door;
it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
Genesis 4:6-7
Three men lay dead or wounded as their shattered family looked on in horror. The scene lives in my imagination, knowing how it feels to lose someone I love in an instant. The shock, the pain, the fear is overwhelming.
We see it played out on the news every day, lives wasted because someone thought their own wants were more important than someone else’s life; because someone let their anger get the best of them; because someone loved themselves and had no love for others. I never met those who died, but I knew family members who survived.
Almost one hundred years ago, my great grandfather and great uncle were murdered in full view of their family. The killers went free. No one testified to the truth because they were afraid. The pain lives on, as the family of the killers benefit from the spoils of their evil deeds. I have read their claims of innocence, but God knows the evil that was in their hearts. He will not allow the guilty to go unpunished.
I read my great grandparents’ plea to settle the dispute in a legal manner. Their attempt to gain justice signed their death warrants. How many times do we try to do right, only to have it blow up in our face? How many reports have we seen of a world where people are out to serve their own needs, regardless of the cost to others?
Cain was very angry because his brother’s sacrifice pleased God and his did not. God warned him of the consequences of his choice. “But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.” Killing Abel didn’t make things right.
Things have not changed since the days of the Old West. It is easy to let anger take control. It is easy to allow disagreement to escalate to hatred. Jesus equates anger with murder. He says to love one another as He loved us.
What if people considered their neighbors more important than themselves? Paul wrote in Romans, “Do not let yourself be overcome by evil, but overcome (master) evil with good.” (AMP)
Confessing anger and hateful thoughts brings peace. How we choose to act on them has eternal consequences. Standing for right is always blessed by God.

Security

“Your castles and strongholds shall have bars of iron and bronze,
and as your day, so shall your strength, your rest and security, be.”
Deuteronomy 33:25
Thin, gray clouds streaked the morning-blue sky from the east. To the west, the nearby mountains showed purple against the lightening sky. The early morning quiet wrapped its cocoon around me. Everything was peaceful and quiet. Inside, my mind and heart reeled with uncertainty about my husband’s job situation, young adult children moving ever onward and away, and my own irritating health issues. My surroundings stood at stark odds with my heart. I felt like the birds which mistakenly flew into our large picture windows, confused by the unseen barrier.
Just a short time ago everything was settled, calm, and predictable. Life had a comforting, settled feeling. New adventures stood on the horizon, accompanied by a strong sense of purpose and direction. Now nothing felt right.
“God’s in control, even when life spins out of control.” The voice whispered in my ear, but my heart wasn’t at rest. Like the unwelcome sound of a motorcycle in the valley below, a gnawing sense of the unfamiliar had wormed its way into my heart, robbing me of joy and numbing my outlook. My comfort zone had disappeared. I’ve always felt like an overcomer, but I just felt overcome.
“Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him…” The words of Job worked their way into my mind. I certainly wasn’t being slain. I was only going through a rough patch. All kinds of hope and good things lay waiting up ahead.
“For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.” The words of Deuteronomy 30 reminded me of the rewards of obedience. “Just keep on walking," the Spirit whispered. "Stay the course and everything will be fine.”
Our faith doesn’t rest on feelings. It rests on the fact of God’s faithfulness to His promises. “Okay Lord, I don’t feel it, but I’m staying the course. I know you’re right alongside me. Bring me through.” I went forward to meet my day.
Walk forward, in God’s strength and faithfulness. He will give you strength, rest and security, no matter what your circumstances. Stay the course, knowing the castle of your faith has bars of iron and bronze. You are safe in Him.

Living with Purpose

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life
through our knowledge of him who called us by his own
glory and goodness.” 2 Peter 1:3

I sin like everyone else. I have wrong thoughts and motives, I get angry and lazy and waste some of the time God has given me, but I am a child of God because I have accepted the forgiveness He offers. Being a Christian doesn’t make you perfect any more than living in a garage makes you a car. I will never be perfect in this life, but I can grow to be more and more like Jesus if I make learning about Him a priority above all others.
My favorite scripture is in the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy. As Moses says his farewell to the Israelites before his death, he gives them a message from God about how they are to live once they enter the Promised Land. He tells them, “‘Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day… They are not just idle words for you—they are your life.’”
Once you have accepted the gift of salvation, you must live in a different manner than before. Changes have to be made. Just like you could not earn forgiveness and eternal life by good deeds, you can’t live the life Christ wants you to on your own strength. I fail many times a day, but the words of scripture give me hope. God doesn’t expect me to do it on my own.
At the moment you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live within you and empower you to do the works He plans for you. The first chapter of Second Peter lists a lot of attributes that Christians are to display. I am not capable of it on my own, but He knew that.
I am not good, self-controlled, godly, kind, loving, and wise, but He is. As I read the Bible every day, I see what He wants from me and can ask for His help to do it. I need frequent reminders that I have been saved from my sins, and I want to understand all I can about the loving God who saved me.
Begin your big adventure of the Christian life by letting Jesus become your Lord, the one who controls your life. Dig deep into His word every day to find all you need to become all He intends you to be. Live like the new creation you are.
