Behold the Lamb of God - Part III

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life…but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
1 Peter 1:18-19

My life has meaning and purpose that will live after I am gone. Not everyone can say that, but I am more certain of that than anything except that I will spend eternity in heaven with Jesus. If you can’t make those statements, you need to examine the true meaning of Easter.
I sin like everyone else. I have wrong thoughts and motives, I get angry and lazy and waste some of the time God has given me, but I am a child of God because I have accepted the forgiveness He offers.
All religions claim to offer “a way” to God, only Jesus Christ claimed to be “the way, the truth, and the life.” Only Jesus promised salvation from God’s judgment and the certainty of eternal life, rather than a hope of maybe being good enough. No path I can follow or deed I can perform will make me good enough to earn it. Salvation is a gift from the only man good enough, “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”
As the only innocent man who ever lived hung on a cross, His life’s blood pouring onto the ground below, the world was plunged into darkness and He cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” The sins of every person who ever lived or will live, were placed on Him, and God, the Father, turned His back because a holy God cannot look on sin.
God accepted His sacrifice at the exact moment the lambs were being sacrificed in the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. Jesus’ cry of, “It is finished,” meant the debt owed to God for the sins of mankind was paid in full, and He gave up His spirit and died. When I accept the forgiveness He offers for my sin, paid by the shedding of His blood, He grants forgiveness and eternal life as a gift.
Gifts aren’t earned, they are given. They only become a gift when the receiver accepts them. Have you accepted the free gift of salvation from Jesus Christ?
If you can’t make the statement I can, accept God’s gift of forgiveness this Easter. When God looks at you, He will see the forgiveness paid for by Jesus Christ, and you will be good enough, through no act of your own, but by the blood of Jesus Christ.

Behold the Lamb of God - Part II

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,
that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16

The bedroom was dark, my mind full of questions for the God I was only beginning to learn about. On the closet door hung a drawing of Jesus from our denominational youth magazine, the crown of thorns pressed into His brow, a look of anguish in His eyes.
There was no audible answer, but the room filled with a presence I felt—something tangible and personal. I didn’t have to open my eyes to know Jesus was there. He filled my heart and mind in a way I had never experienced. He was real and He cared. My cries did not go unheeded. His answer was to be there for me, to plant in my heart a desire for more of Him, a deeper understanding than I had at the time.
The suffering face in the picture had meaning. Jesus knew what it was to suffer, and cared that I hurt. The knowledge was balm to my wounded spirit. He touched me that night, and my life would never be the same again.
A deep need for understanding drove me to the Bible. For days I poured over the New Testament scriptures every spare minute. I had to know what the death of Jesus meant for me, what it meant for Him to be my Savior—the reason He died for my sins and what was required of me.
Is there spiritual hunger in your soul? Do you long for answers the world can’t satisfy? Jesus Christ was rejected by the majority of the world He lived in. Even His closest friends failed to understand who He was until after His death. The world “received Him not,” turning down the opportunity to become “children of God.”
When Nicodemus met with Jesus after dark, seeking answers to his questions, Jesus said he must be born again. If you haven’t met the Jesus who died for you, turn to the Bible and pour over its words of hope like I did. You will find the answer to every need, the purpose you long for, and the promise of eternal life.
Unlike those who failed to receive Him, let Jesus make your life new. Like Nicodemus, be born of the Spirit and give your life to leading others to know Jesus Christ, the giver of eternal life, the giver of meaning to everyday life.

Behold the Lamb of God – Part I

He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.  Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
John 1:12-13
The cold metal of the folding chair stung my bare legs, and I fidgeted, trying to keep my Easter dress and ruffled petticoats underneath me. The thin, white gloves did nothing to keep my hands warm, and my feet were almost numb in my thin anklet socks and shiny, black, patent leather shoes. As I tucked my hands deeper into my coat pockets, I wished I could yank my Easter hat off my head and throw it away so the headband would stop digging into my head. Easter Sunrise service was miserable.
The week before I had stood at the front of the church and answered, “Yes,” to the pastor’s question. I accepted Jesus Christ as the Son of God who died for my sins. It was a ritual all fourth graders in our denomination went through: four weeks of the pastor’s class, a profession of faith on Palm Sunday, and baptism by immersion on Easter Sunday.
Later, as I searched the bushes in the back yard for bright-colored eggs with my sisters, I remember thinking, “My life will never be the same. I have given it to God.” Even at that tender age, I knew what I had done had a lifetime of implications.
Easter memories stand out very clear to this day. It was a time to dress up in a new dress, painstakingly made by my mother, and have pictures taken with my sisters and later with my cousins. My Easter basket brimmed over with plastic eggs full of candy I was only allowed to eat if I finished my dinner.
Whatever your earliest Easter memories are, there comes a time when childhood memories need to give way to an understanding of the true meaning of our Lord’s death and resurrection.
Have you come face to face with the risen Savior of the world? Have you been confronted with the understanding that Jesus Christ bore your sins in His sinless body as He was beaten and crucified? Have you made the decision to accept His sacrifice on your behalf and live your life in gratitude for His forgiveness?
Determine to spend the next three weeks searching the scriptures for the true meaning of Easter. Throw away childish misunderstanding and receive Him as He intended you should.

The House of God

Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.”
Psalm 127:1

My husband and I overlooked the auditorium of the church, giving each other a quiet nod of understanding and agreement. “It’s a blessing to be a part of this.”
As we drove home, we shared the sense of fulfillment and gratitude, remembering years of labor to reach where our church is today. We have an investment in in the buildings, but more so in the people, the lives touched and changed.
We came looking for a good place for our mid-school age children. Unhappy with every church we visited, they found two familiar faces and the promise of “mud Olympics” the following week. After about three months we knew we were home. The rented gym of the YWCA, transformed into a church on Sundays, and the spirit of God was present in the 80 to 90 people who worshipped there.
Seventeen years later, that “ugly gray metal building,” on one of our city’s busiest thoroughfares has been painted a pretty shade, of ocher. It stands next to a beautiful building of stucco and glass on some of the prime real estate in town. We have seen it grow in attendance, and the various roles we have played in its work have enriched our lives.
We’re grateful for the building, but the blessing is the people. When people grow in the Lord and minister to each other both inside and outside those walls, you have a community of believers united by a shared faith. What we feel isn’t satisfaction in the property, but joy in the spirit filling those buildings with the love of Christ. God is allowing us to be part of His work.
The “stinky clothes room,” where the “Y” once stored donations, is now a beautiful classroom. People whose lives resembled those stinky clothes have become a sweet aroma of Christ to the world. Missionaries have gone out to Africa, Central America, and into our city’s neediest places.
We are blessed because God has used us in building that community, and in turn, blessed our lives in myriad ways.
Where do you invest your time and talent? Do you have a community of fellow believers and a place of service to God?
Find a church where God can use the gifts He has given you so your labors are not in vain. Become part of what He is building, and you will be blessed.
