“The men were amazed and asked, ‘What kind of man is this?
Even the winds and the waves obey him!’” Matthew 8:27

Topping the summit of the 13,000 foot Imogene Pass in Colorado, I stopped our jeep to watch a storm moving in. Thunderstorms travel fast in the high mountains, and this one moved in with a vengeance. We headed down the mountain with the wind rocking the jeep and rain pelting the windshield.
As usual, I was driving. Getting out on four-wheel drive trails is one of the few adventurous things I enjoy. All of a sudden my husband pointed to where two people were struggling up the mountain. With lightning crackling all around, he got out and asked them if we could give them a ride to the bottom. They accepted, but were surprised to see I was the driver. Since they were women, I found their response laughable. He told them I was the one they wanted to be driving, since this was “my thing.”
The two hiked that mountain often, but were quite unprepared for a sudden storm, having only plastic rain ponchos for their protection. Once safely to their car, they thanked us and we headed back, this time able to enjoy the scenery as the storm had passed.
Life’s storms often move in just as fast as that mountain thunderstorm, and with as much violence. We can be caught unaware and as unprepared as those women. When Jesus’ disciples were in a storm on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus was sleeping in the boat, undisturbed. They woke Him up, telling Him they would all drown. He responded by saying, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?”
Unexpected trials often bring out our deepest anxieties, no matter how close we are to the Lord. In those times, we forget He is in control and focus on how unprepared we are. Even long-time believers react in fear, thinking the worst is certain to happen.
When the disciples awakened Jesus, they never expected Him to tell the storm to cease. They “were amazed.” We are often surprised at the unexpected displays of God’s power in our times of need, but Jesus is in the driver's seat.
Spend time reading scripture when times are good. Then when life’s storms take you by surprise, you can react in faith, recognizing that God already knows the outcome and has it well in hand. Trials will come, but you can be at peace knowing Jesus is in control.

Live To the Lord

“For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”
Romans 14:7-8

He was gone. Struck by lightning under a clear blue sky—my daddy went to be with his Lord.
The same bolt of lightning hit the rest of the family as we were told about his death. Where was God? Why did this happen when I prayed he would live to see his grandchildren grown to adulthood? There in my new prayer journal was my request, written after having lunch with him one last time, a couple of weeks before his death. I lay in bed, unable to get up and do anything productive. Questions circled in my head—but there were no answers.
The phone rang and a fellow discussion leader from Bible Study Fellowship called to see how I was. Her dad had died only a few weeks earlier. She understood my pain. At her urging I read my lesson for the week, and in it were words I needed to hear.
God causes us to pray in order to reveal what is in our hearts, and so we are able to see His answers when they come. It was my desire to have him with us. It was God’s wisdom to take him home that we might lean on God.
My children remember their grandpa for the active role he played in their lives, and he lives on in their hearts and memories. The things he taught them make a difference, even 17 years later.
Jesus teaches us to store up treasures in heaven, where moths and rust can’t destroy. One of my treasures is my daddy. He is waiting for the wonderful day when we are reunited as a family, when we’re together again.
His death has impacted the lives of more people than I can tell. Those who knew him well, and those who heard his story were touched by his life, committed to the Lord. Some never heard his name, but benefited from the lightning safety information our family spreads at every opportunity. Lives saved for a chance to know God—lives saved by coming to know Jesus Christ through his testimony.
I heard of another man this week whose life was indelibly impacted by my dad.
What will you be remembered for? Will it be your faith and godly character?
Live to the Lord, so that when you die you will meet Jesus.

Peace in Change

God intended it for good…” Genesis 50:20 NIV
I felt as if the rug had been pulled out from under me. It was like landing on my back, staring at the ceiling and wondering what happened. The news of a major life change less than ten years from retirement was too much to comprehend.
It is easy to make plans, and take your current state for granted, assuming nothing will change. We have the head knowledge that God will care for us in any situation, but sudden changes create doubt and fear. Scripture says that man makes his plans, but the outcome is in God’s hands. Knowing that and putting our faith in action are two different things.
Our extended families are all here. We built a home to retire in. We’re settled in our church, Bible study, and routines. Life was supposed to slowly wind down surrounded by the familiar. But sometimes the biggest blessings come when we leave the familiar behind and take a step of faith.
We aren’t certain how to look at a future that threatens to take us away from everything familiar and loved. Though not out of malice, our change, like Joseph’s was not of our choosing. Nothing prepared us for what was coming. It hit us out of the blue.
Joseph found himself surrounded by strange people and a strange culture, far away from everything he knew, and no one gave him a choice. No one asked us either, and we wake up and can’t go back to sleep, wondering what the future holds.
His trials grew him into a man of great spiritual depth and exemplary character. He trusted God to provide all he needed, gave his best, and prospered. In my heart I know God can do that for us too. In my head, I cry out “Why?”
What trials and changes face you today? God is big enough to handle all of your questions and doubts. He hears the cries of your heart, and understands your fear of the unknown. At the same time, He promises He will never leave or forsake you. Be at peace.
Determine to wake each morning with a statement of trust in God on your lips and a believing heart that refuses to fear. It won’t be easy, but stepping out in faith will yield rewards you never dreamed possible.

Rootstock or New Creation

“Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.” Romans 7:25

Double-take. I walked out my back door and noticed leaves on the rosebush we thought was dead. My beautiful red rose had appeared dead in the fall, but we never dug it up, and what I thought was a piece of pink paper caught on the thorns was a pink rose.
I don’t know much about roses, but I know one type is sometimes grafted onto the rootstock of another. The rootstock had lived through the winter and the true nature of the rose was now coming out. Much to my surprise, within a few weeks a red rose opened up giving me red and pink roses on the same bush. It was unusual and kind of pretty, but neither looked as healthy as they should. Both were small and sickly.
When we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, we are given a new nature. The Spirit of Christ comes to live within us. The problem arises when our old nature, our sinful nature, decides to show itself. There is a place inside me where the rootstock hides, now and then showing its true colors. They are things I thought were surrendered to His control, the inner self I thought was hidden.
We all have that hidden rootstock.  It may even be pretty to the world, like my rose, but it shows me for what I am, a sinner saved by grace, still bearing in my body the sin nature needing the touch of the Master’s hand. I am, after all, a work in progress. Those two natures living side by side will never be as healthy or beautiful as they would be if only the new natures God controls existed without the other to sap its strength and beauty.
We are fortunate to have a loving God, who works within us so that, in the end, He can present us clean, a spotless and a perfect work of His wise and loving hands.
What sinful thoughts and desires do you struggle to hide from the world? What do you fear popping out and revealing that you aren’t all you seem to be?
Let God take care of your sinful rootstock, and replace it with His beautiful, thriving new creation able will bless others and show His love to a hurting world.
